About Serra da Gardunha

Serra da Gardunha is part of the Cordilheira Central mountain range in central Portugal, lying just beyond Serra da Estrela, and giving way to an extensive plain known as Cova da Beira. Stretching some 20km from southwest to northeast and 10km across, with its highest peak (Penha) reaching 1227m, the Gardunha boasts breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and is renowned as an area of outstanding natural beauty, dominated by towering granite rocks. Its slopes and valleys are alive with local history, myth and legend, and are a hub for traditional crafts, gastronomy and culture.  Serra da Gardunha is part of Portugal’s national list of SIC’s (Sites of Community Importance) of the Natura 2000 networks.  It is considered a Special Conservation Area in the framework of the Habitats Directive (92/43/CEE), due to some species in its fauna and flora being of highest conservation importance.
